How much to charge for private basketball training is the wrong question if you are still thinking in sessions. The right question is: what are you selling? If the answer is an hour of your time, the price will always feel expensive, parents will always price-shop you, and your income will always be chained to your calendar. Change what you sell, and the price problem solves itself.
Marco came to the US from Serbia barely speaking English and spent two years stocking shelves in a grocery dairy department while training kids on the side for $40 an hour. In 2024 his basketball training business did $149,000. He did not get there by raising his session rate from $40 to $60 to $75. He got there by stopping the sale of sessions entirely and getting parents committed to programs.
Run the session math honestly. At $60 a session, a $5,000 month means 84 sessions. That is roughly 20 sessions a week, every week, with no cancellations, no holidays, no slow season. Now factor in reality: players cancel, families go on vacation, the off-season dries up. The session model has a ceiling, and most trainers hit it somewhere between $3,000 and $5,000 a month.
The full breakdown is in my post on how to make $5K-$10K per month as a basketball trainer. The conclusion is the same here: the trainers doing real money sell programs, not sessions. A 6-to-12-month program with a defined outcome, priced at $3,000 to $10,000 per player.
Package what you already do. Give it a name, a length, and a promise. Not "training" — a program. Two players on a $3,000 program is $6,000. One player on a $5,000 program and another on a $3,000 program is $8,000. You have matched or beaten the month the session grinder needed 84 sessions to reach, with a handful of committed families and a fraction of the scheduling chaos.
Parents do not buy drills. They buy outcomes — making varsity, earning a starting spot, building real confidence on the court. A program gives that outcome a container: a name, a length, and a promise. Sessions give parents a price per hour to compare against every other trainer in town. Nobody can price-shop a program against a session, because you are no longer selling the same thing.
This is also why higher prices get you better clients. At $60 a session you get price-shoppers who cancel, no-show, and haggle. At $3,000 for a program you get committed families who show up, do the work, and get results — which become your testimonials, which become your next ten clients. The quality of the customer determines the success of the business, full stop.
Do not apologize for the price, and do not present a menu. Say what the program is, what outcome it is built for, how long it runs, and what it costs. One program, one outcome, one price. If a parent wants sessions, that is useful information: they are telling you they are not your client yet. Let them go. The clients who leave over a price increase to a better offer were never going to build your business. They were renting your time at a discount.
If you are still working out the offer itself, read my post on how to raise your prices as a private sports trainer. The move is never just a higher number on the same thing. The move is a different thing to sell.
How much should I charge per session for private basketball training?
Stop pricing per session. Package a 6-to-12-month program with a defined outcome and charge $3,000 to $10,000 for it. Sessions cap your income at your calendar; programs do not.
What if parents in my area cannot afford $3,000?
Your market pays for AAU fees, club fees, private lessons, and $200 shoes. The money is there. The question is whether your offer is compelling enough to earn it. If parents will not pay $3,000 for your program, the problem is the program, not the parents.
Should I offer a cheaper option to get started?
No. A cheap option fills your calendar with price-shoppers and teaches the market that you are the discount trainer. Start with the real program. Your first committed families are worth more than fifty session-buyers.
