Most private sports coaches who want to go full-time are asking the wrong question. They ask how to get more clients, or how to fill their calendar, or how to finally quit the job that's funding the coaching business.
The real question is simpler: how many clients do you need at what price to replace your income? For most coaches, the answer is smaller than they think. This is not a motivation problem. It's a math problem — and the math only works if you stop selling sessions.
Run the numbers on the typical part-time coach. Sixty dollars a session, fifteen sessions a week when things are going well: that's $900 a week, maybe $3,600 a month gross. Then the club season hits and half your clients disappear. Then field rental, gas, and the cancellations that never pay.
And notice the deeper problem: every dollar is chained to an hour. To replace a $50,000 job income on sessions, you'd need roughly 800 paid sessions a year — week in, week out, no slow months, no burnout. Nobody gets there without burning out or starving out.
This is why most part-time coaches stay part-time. Not because they lack work ethic. Because the model they picked can't carry a full-time life. The way out is not more sessions. It's a different thing to sell.
Ten clients at $5,000 is $50,000. Read that again. Not ten clients a month. Ten clients, on 6 to 12 month programs, priced between $3,000 and $10,000 depending on the commitment.
That's the entire arithmetic of going full-time. You don't need a big roster, a big following, or a full calendar. You need a small number of clients paying program prices instead of session prices. One program client at $5,000 replaces roughly 80 sessions at $60 — without 80 hours of your life.
If you're still working out what to charge, read my breakdown of how much to charge for private soccer training. The short version: sell a program with a name, a length, and a defined outcome — not your hours.
Here is the part where most coaches get it backwards: they quit the job first and hope the coaching income follows. That's a gamble, and gamblers don't usually win.
The order that works is the reverse. Keep the day job. Sell programs on the side — six to twelve month commitments, $3,000 to $10,000, paid up front or on a plan. Let the program revenue build while your job still covers the bills. When the coaching income consistently covers what the job was covering, you make the move from a position of strength, not panic.
How long does that take? There is no honest timeline anyone can hand you. It depends on your price, your market, and how many conversations you're willing to have. Anyone who tells you "quit in 90 days" is selling you something. The right question is not how fast — it's whether the program revenue is real, repeat, and covering the gap before you give up the steady paycheck.
For the client side of the equation — how to actually find the families who buy programs — see my post on how to get clients as a private basketball trainer. The mechanics transfer across sports.
Here's something I've said for years: the quality of the customer determines the success of the business.
At $60 a session, you attract price-shoppers. They cancel, they no-show, they haggle, they disappear when the club season starts. You can't build a full-time career on customers who treat your work like a commodity.
At $3,000 to $10,000 for a program, everything changes. You get committed families who show up, do the work, and get results. Those results become testimonials. Those testimonials become your next ten clients. The price doesn't just change your revenue — it changes who walks through your door, and who walks through your door determines whether you can actually leave the job.
This is the filter that makes the leap survivable. A handful of serious clients will carry you. Dozens of casual ones will drown you.
This isn't theory. Fernando grew his soccer training business to a full-time income by doing exactly this — watch his story here: How Fernando grew his soccer training business to a full-time income.
On the basketball side, one trainer quit her 9-5 job and went full-time with her training business: How she quit her 9-5 and went full time with her basketball training business.
And Coach Marcus — who started as a part-time basketball coach and built his way to $500,000 a year — shows what the model looks like at full scale: How Coach Marcus doubled his basketball training business.
Notice what none of them did: they didn't quit first and hope. They built program revenue on the side, then made the move. If you want a sense of what the income ceiling looks like once programs are working, see how much a private soccer trainer makes.
How many clients do I need to go full-time as a private sports coach?
Fewer than you think. At program pricing — $3,000 to $10,000 for 6 to 12 month commitments — ten clients at $5,000 is $50,000. Start with your own target income, divide by a realistic program price, and that's your number. It's almost always in the single digits or low teens, not the hundreds.
Should I quit my job first to focus on coaching?
No. Keep the job and build program revenue on the side until the coaching income consistently covers what the job was covering. Quitting first turns a business decision into a gamble. The coaches who last make the leap from a position of strength — program revenue that's real and repeatable — not from a burned bridge.
Do I need a big following or a lot of clients?
Neither. Full-time income on programs comes from a small number of committed clients, not a big audience. Ten serious families on $5,000 programs beat a hundred casual session buyers on every measure that matters: revenue, stability, and your sanity.
What should I charge so I can actually go full-time?
Sell 6 to 12 month programs priced between $3,000 and $10,000 — not sessions by the hour. Sessions cap your income at your calendar; programs with a defined outcome let a handful of clients replace a job's income. Package what you already do, name it, price it like the commitment it is.
I work with established private sports coaches who want to stop selling sessions and start selling $3,000+ programs. If that's you, apply here.
